BienenstichKuchen/ German Bee Sting Cake.

IMG_5057Since baking for We Knead to Bake I have come across different breads. Most of them something I never knew existed. It’s been an amazing experience.

For We Knead to Bake this festive season we are baking BienenstichKuchen/ German Bee Sting Cake.

Bienenstich is not really a bread but a traditional German sweet yeasted cake baked with topping of crunchy almond toffee-like layer and filled with a vanilla pastry cream. Bienenstich is traditionally eaten as dessert and also served with tea or coffee.

Its name Bienenstich in German means “bee sting” and probably got its name from the honey flavoured topping that it typical of this yeasted cake.

Fruit Salad

fruit salad

The moment I announce the making of fruit salad the girls disappear.

The reason being they do not like a mixture of fruits in the custard or ice cream. Give them plain fruits and plain custard or ice cream and jelly separate they are willing to eat it. In fact they relish it! Not surprising hence fruit salad hardly ever features on our menu.

This one glass of fruit salad contains the leftover fruits because I wanted it desperately and I am fed up of fruit salads served in restaurants.

What I have used here is what I had at hand even the custard but you can use any fruit of your liking. I will suggest adding papaya just before serving as at times it gives a bitter taste.

  • 3 segments of oranges
  • ½ a chikoo
  • ½ slice of papaya
  • ¼ slice of apple
  • ½ cup of strawberry custard (prepared as per the instructions on the packet)
  • 1 tblspn of rose syrup (optional)

  • Mix all the fruits and chill them
  • Add the chilled custard.
  • Drizzle the rose syrup on top.
  • Click a picture.
  • Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Gajar Ka Halwa

Gajar Ka Halwa anyone!

Gajar Ka Halwa anyone!

One of my favourite sweets (there is only one sweet that I do not like rest are all my favourites) is Gajar Ka Halwa. There is nothing that beats the delicious halwa that just melts in your mouth like butter under hot knife, snow in sun…. get the idea.

The moment we start getting these carrots which are called as dilli ka gajar I just fantasizing about this halwa or gajar kheer.  In fact when I start making this halwa till I finish the making I never know if it will be making halwa or kheer.  The reason being since I am the only person who is going to eat both these I never stock up or buy mava. The day I decide that the craving for gajar sweet cannot be ignored anymore I commence making this delicious gajar halwa. In case I have time( also patience to wait ) it ends up as halwa else I finish it as kheer.

This is my breakfast but that does not mean that you cannot have it for lunch, tea or dinner followed by dessert! It will taste awesome with ice cream, vanilla ice cream!

This is my Blogging Marathon entry for  the month long Marathon under the theme” Seasonal”!

Chocolate Cheese Cake for Baking Partners

Irresistible Chocolate Cheesecake !!

Irresistible Chocolate Cheesecake !!

Every month on the 15th the baking partners post a bake.  The brainchild of Swati Iyer  and an excellent baker she chooses some fantastic bakes.

Since joining this group I have tried out  Shaped Bread Rolls, Chocolate Pumpkin Cupcake , Ultimate Chocolate Cream Cheese Cookies, The best Chocolate cake that I have ever tasted Reine de Saba avec Glaçage au Chocolat: Chocolate Almond Cake  and now this month cheese cake.

Now every recipe I have read asks for cream cheese and since it is expensive in India and then there is no guarantee that I will use the entire tub I never ventured in the area. My daughter, the elder one this time (rolling my eyes) asked for cheese cake sometime ago. She is a sweet non-eater; even after she ate this cake she told me she liked the crust better than the cake. Mind you this was after they (both my daughters) had finished the cake.

Well it takes all kinds … anyway please do try this awesome cake and sink in a delightful bliss!!  Diet ko maro goli yaar you do need a break!!

Trifle Pudding for BM #24

For this BM #24 my theme is Kids Special Desserts.  Next 3 days its desserts galore here.

Now since I am not still comfortable tying out a lot of details my post is short out of necessity. Do I hear a sigh of relief don’t worry I will continue writing my long lengthy posts soon. (I wish I knew how to make that smiley of a devil here)!

One thing I have learnt and I will like to share with all of you. In case you find a bag heavy please ask someone to help you. You are no more the she-woman you once were!!

Let’s begin with the big hit that we had at Akanksha’s birthday party it was a theme party themed around Harry Potter.

I was supposed to conjure all the food that was needed.

One of the desserts was pudding; actually I was to make treacle tart.  Tarts you all know are time consuming and frankly I knew I will not be able to manage making food and tarts for about 30 people.  Once I could handle that not so now.

So I did some sweet talking and convinced the elder daughter then second one, in that order, that Trifle pudding is acceptable. (Of course I had to make a second dessert too but more about that later). Right now let us check out Trifle Pudding.

The beauty of this dish is that you can make it the day prior to the party and top it with whipped cream on the day of the party even as late as 1-2 hours before you need it.

( O these pics are mostly taken by my daughter I was too busy to think about pictures etc.)
·        ½ kg cake, I brought plain vanilla sponge
·        2 tins of fruit cocktail( I forgot the weight but they were del Monte)
·        100 grms  jar of mixed fruit  jam(optional)
·        Whipped cream (please see notes below)
·        Some liqueur about 2 tblspn (optional )
·        Cherries for decoration

·        A big Glass bowl
·        A medium bowl
·        A small bowl and about  ¼ cup water for melting the jam
·         Sharp knife
·         Beaters and bowl for whipping  cream
·        Ice in big bowl for whipping

·        Make slices of the cake, we made some small and some slices. Layer them in the bowl. Reserve some slices for the topmost layer. (This will depend basically on the size of your bowl and the slices of the cake I had some 10-12 slices).
·         If you are using the jam mix the jam and water to make a thick slurry.  You will find it easier if you heat it.
·        Drizzle it with a spoon along the sides. As I was doing this just for colour I used very little along the edges of the bowl.
·        Meanwhile drain all the liquids from the fruit cocktail and mix the liquid with liqueur.
·        Sprinkle some 2 or 3 tblspn of the liquid. Add the fruits from the fruit cocktail just enough to cover the slices.

·        Repeat these steps till you are about 2 inches away from the top of the bowl.  (For the last layer finish all your fruits, reserve the liquid).
·        Lay the cake slices on the fruits so that it covers all the fruits.

·        Sprinkle all the liquid from the fruits use the jam slurry .

·        Now cover the bowl with cling film and let it sit in the fridge till needed. (Mine resided in my neighbour’s fridge and came home just 2 hours before the party.)

·        Just before the first guest arrived I beat the whipped cream over a bowl of ice till I got firm peaks.
·        Spread the whipped cream on the cake till the entire top.
·        Decorate with cherries. I wished I had some jam slurry to draw a few lines but by then it was residing in the b’day girl’s tummy so sorry.

·        Cover with the cling film and put back in the fridge.
·         Serve chilled to a lot of oooooooo! And ahhhhhh!
I cannot tell you the exact amount of whipped cream I used. For I popped about 500 grms of the unwhipped cream and whipped it.
My vessel which holds 2 litres of milk was ¾ full.
I used the whipped cream on both the cake and pudding and there was enough left for the girls to eat the whipped cream the next day and say this was the best dessert, Garfield like( when Garfield has finished the pizza or lasagne by himself)!!
